Is Bill Gates Warning Us About AI or …

Is Bill Gates Warning Us About AI or …

Look, if you read between the lines of that Bill Gates piece, it’s less of a public warning and more of a masterclass in billionaire reputation laundering.

First, Gates just spent months dodging heat over his House committee testimony regarding Jeffrey Epstein, his messy divorce, and his old antitrust legacy. Suddenly, he drops a 6,000-word essay claiming AI is going to end humanity, steal all our jobs, and cook up bioweapons. That isn't an accident. In PR, if you want people to stop talking about your personal scandals, you give them a high-concept, sci-fi existential crisis to debate instead. By framing himself as the brave truth teller risking it all to warn humanity, his image magically morphs from tarnished tech mogul back to heroic world savior.

Second, Gates blasts the tech industry for privately hiding how dangerous AI is just so they can raise "the next trillion dollars." He paints himself as this noble, uncompromised outsider who is above the money. But wait a minute, who built Microsoft? And who is currently bankrolling the entire AI revolution with tens of billions of dollars? Microsoft! He criticizes "the industry's greed" in general terms, but notice how he never directly calls out the very company that makes up the bulk of his legacy and wealth.

Then there are his actual solutions, which sound nice on paper but are completely backwards in reality. He suggests a "token tax" on AI compute to slow down human job replacement. But here's the catch: a micro-tax on computing power is absolute pocket change for mega-corporations like Microsoft, Google, or Meta. For a small startup or an open-source university lab, though? It's a death sentence. Under the guise of saving human jobs, proposals like this actually just build a massive regulatory moat around Big Tech, keeping potential competitors from ever getting off the ground.

Don't get me wrong AI job displacement and tech safety are massive issues that we need to figure out fast. But when an old-school monopolist tells you to trust him because he's a "flawed messenger," you have to look at the incentives. He’s shifting the headline narrative away from his personal past while simultaneously advocating for policies that protect the exact industry incumbents he claims to be fighting.
